Are rabbit pelts worth anything?
Raw pelts are not worth much. The only thing is rabbit leather is super soft so it’s just a liner or decorative fur.
How do you prepare pelts for tanning?
A pickle bath is no more than a clean, 5-gallon bucket half filled with tap water, citric acid, pickling salt and a fur -safe degreaser. Your pelt will stay submerged in this solution right up until the day of tanning.

Can you tan a hide with just salt?
Use 1/2 lb of table salt per gallon of water and extremely hot water to dissolve the salt. Mix thoroughly until salt is dissolved and let the water cool. Immerse the hide in the solution and leave for six to eight hours. Overnight is fine, but if you leave it too long, the hair will start falling off the hide.
What kind of salt do you use to tan hides?
Cover the hide using a fine grain non- iodized salt. (We recommend Hay & Stock Salt which is inexpensive and abundant. The iodine in iodized salt can stain the hide.) DO NOT USE ROCK SALT.

Why do you smoke a hide?
This means that when they get wet they will dry hard if not continually stretched again as they dry. In order to combat this effect, traditionally tanned hides are laid over a smoky fire to “set” the tan and keep them softer if they happen to get wet. Smoking also adds a nice buckskin color to the hides as well.
How do you use rabbit hide to tan with borax?
Coat the inside of the pelt with the Borax paste, using a knife to spread it to a thickness of 1/8 inch. Put on rubber gloves and work the paste with your fingers, rubbing it firmly into the skin. Leave the paste on the skin until the next day, then scrape it off and apply another coating.
